Whether you are considering becoming a professional athlete, or you are working as an athlete in a semi-professional way, one of the main parts of that job is looking after the body. As an athlete, your body is your profession, and as such you need to make sure that you are taking great care of it as best as you can. As we are about to see, there are many things that this entails, and you are going to have to bear a lot of things in mind at once. But as long as you remember the following, you should be able to take care of your body so much better.

Go Easy

It might look as though top athletes are always able to turn their body to anything that they want to, but all exercises and sports take a lot of practice. You can’t simply become an expert runner just because you happen to be an expert cyclist, or not overnight anyway. Any kind of cross-training you do, or anything that you might be trying to pick up that is new to you, you still have to go easy as you try to get into it.

This is important to remember, because overextending yourself is one of the main ways that you will harm yourself as an athlete. You can be bold, but you still need to take it easy enough that you are not going to cause yourself any particular problems. If you can do that, you should find that you can turn to anything you like, and still take great care of your body in the process.

Cold Therapy

If you are doing a lot of really intense muscle workouts, then you need to find a way to allow your muscles to relax and recover fully. It’s important to remember that exercising your muscles is literally a form of damage you are causing yourself: you are pulling apart the tendons in the muscle into its fibers, and it then regrows stronger and bigger, which is why your muscles increase in mass afterwards. But because of this damage, you have to find a way to allow your muscles to repair fully, and one way is using cold therapy.

With cold therapy, you are put into a cold chamber of some kind for an extended amount of time. Professional athletes often use an ice chamber, which you can often find at the best gyms, or if you want to replicate this at home you can simply create an ice bath for yourself. This is especially important to do after a whole day of intense exercise, or after a particularly grueling match or session. If you do this every time, your muscles are going to be grateful for it, and you will be causing yourself so much less damage in the long run.

Medical Intervention

From time to time, there is going to be a need to have some kind of medical intervention to ensure that you are looking after your body properly. In most cases, this will be because there has been an injury or you have otherwise caused some harm to yourself. As a professional or semi-professional athlete, you should have a medical team by your side, at the very least some kind of personal trainer, but you might also have more specialized medical staff if there are some parts of your body that need certain care and attention.

It is not uncommon for athletes to need surgery repairing some part of themselves from time to time. Whether it’s revision knee surgery, or something a little more complex, you should bear in mind that it is always important to get the procedure you need when you need it. If you allow an injured body to continue training, you are going to cause yourself a lot of further damage in the future – and it might be very painful indeed. When medical intervention is needed, just say yes, and trust the doctors to do what they need to do.

Water, Water, Water

If you are exercising a lot, you need to drink a lot of water. The more water you drink, the sooner your muscles repair from exercise, the better your organs work, the more your skin can breathe and allow sweat to flow, and the clearer you can think. It simply is one of the most important things you can possibly do for yourself as an athlete. Carry water everywhere you go, and make sure that you are constantly sipping.

Rest & Recovery Are Parts Of Training

In all of this, you should remember that rest and recovery are parts of your training. It is often tempting to think of them as annoying aspects of the lifestyle which you have to deal with, and you might find there are items when you feel fine and just want to get back out there. However, you should make sure that you are giving yourself plenty of chances to rest and recover at all times. It is actually a part of training your body, and without it you would not be able to continue training in the way you want to. So make sure that you respect the process, and allow rest to happen.

Listen To The Body

Your body will give you all of the signs and signals you need. If it is showing you a lot of pain in one area, rest it. If it is generally feeling unable to continue, rest for a while entirely. You need to listen closely to your body to avoid causing it any serious damage, and to make sure that you are working with it as well as you can. Developing this mindfulness of the body is something that is going to help you considerably in your life as an athlete, so be sure to bear that in mind.
